The benefits of an exercise routine at home

  1. Most of us know that regular physical activity and exercise has great benefits for both our mental and physical health. A lower risk of heart disease and strokes, some forms of cancer and dementia as well as being a good way to relieve stress and alleviate depression and anxiety are just some of the many health benefits of regular physical activity.

  2. But sometimes it can be hard to know where to start, particularly if you do not yet currently have an exercise routine. Experts recommend that we should be doing at least 150 minutes of physical activity every week, which might sound like a lot, but this goal can be reached if you do 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week. Alternatively, you could do several ten minute sessions, two to three times each day.

  3. The key to achieving this is to try and make regular physical activity a habit. When we are stuck at home and feel that we already might not have enough time to do all the thing we need to do in a day, this could seem like a lot. But the benefits of exercise, such as improved energy levels, lifting your mood, improving the quality of your sleep will actually make you better prepared to tackle all the things you need to get done, as well as any extra challenges that life throws at you.

  4. Here are some examples of ways in which you can build healthy habits:

  • Remember why
  • Regularly remind yourself of the benefits of exercise and why you are doing it. Take note of the sense of accomplishment you feel when you have done some exercise, as well as how it makes you feel if you miss a session.

  • Have fun
  • If you hate running, then don’t run – choose something else to do. You will be much more likely to stick to a routine if you find something that you like doing, and there are hundreds of different exercises you can try at home without ever having to step foot in a gym.

  • Follow guided workouts
  • There are thousands of informative videos online, as well as the content available on www.bodyandmindcareguides.com which will show you ways in which you can exercise at home with guided work outs. If you like structure and routine, but are not sure where to get started, then these will be perfect with you.

  • Find a friend
  • Have a friend that you make plans to exercise at the same time with, and bookend your exercise sessions with them. You are much more likely to follow through with your exercise sessions when you feel accountable.
